Losing count

I'm away preparing for my CISSP certification, and as such I haven't had time to work on the streaming, although it's nice to know others are having fun on it. Debbie from CTI was able to post a page up....pretty sweet...I need to find out if I can use linux tools to create MPEG4 files so I can stream this crap....

Day 4-5 : new frustration

I used mencoder to transcode some Windows media video to MPEG4 so I can try to stream using the Quicktime Streaming Server. Creating the web page from which to stream was really easy, but the video didn't play....I wonder why...and what settings I can use in order to set that up...

Day 2 & 3 - Progression

I was able to get OSXVnc installed, which I was more comfortable with in terms of remotely logging onto the Xserve. Runs really nicely. I retrieved a video file from the Computer Technology Integration (CTI) department at our institution, and am using my laptop to transcode it to an MPEG4 file I should be able to stream using the installed QuickTime Streaming Server...let's see how that goes tomorrow....

Restart: Day 1 - Resuscitation

After discovering that the server we got was bad (apparently it's the demo unit that goes to just about everyone) we shipped that one back and got another one.... I was able to get it set up and working so that I can SSH into it, but I'd like to get the Apple Remote Desktop going so I can do some of the other things I've been wanting to do with it....

Day 3,4 - Stagnation

No more progress on getting this Xserve to EVEN START!!!!! Debbie from CTI let me use a MacBook Pro to try to interface with the xserve. First attempt: could not connect....this is getting to be a pain, and our Apple contacts have their schedules full, so we haven't been able to contact them. Superior Apple product, huh????

Day 2 - Frustration

This crap doesn't work! I got the keyboard and mouse from the CTI lady, and the damn thing doesn't want to start. I turned the power on...nothing happens. I read the documentation, and the docs don't work...Time to look at the forums.

Day 1 - Receipt and Objectives...

I received the Xserve today....but I couldn't set it up because I don't have a USB keyboard :( I had other work to do across campus, so I'll wait until the lady in Computer Technology Integration hands me a keyboard. If not, sounds like a serial console install's in order...I woudln't mind trying that out...

On to what to do with this thing. I talked to the head of CTI, and he wants to be able to use this as a streaming server for meetings and classes. I also got some documentation from his secretary on Boot Camp, so I'll try that out also. I want to host my blog and podcasts on this site also, since it will be out on the internet. Lots to do before May 4, when I have to box up the server and send it back....

I also found someone installing Gentoo on the box....I'm DEFINITELY trying that out!!!
